    • Of the 2,034 cases in Allegheny County, 1,904 are confirmed and 130 are probable cases. Additionally, there are 352 past or present hospitalizations (+1). All deaths are of individuals ranging in age from 42-103, with 84 being the median age of those who have died.

Federal Coronavirus Updates

  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
    • Coronavirus-related hospitalizations in at least nine states have been on the rise since Memorial Day, when a spate of large, crowded gatherings and raucous pool parties provoked warnings from health officials. Record numbers of patients requiring inpatient care have been reported in Arizona, where crowds packed tourist spots like Lake Havasu over the long weekend, and Texas, which was one of the first states to ease stay-at-home orders. Nearly 2 million cases have been reported in the United States, with more than 110,000 of those fatal. A British study from researchers at Cambridge and Greenwich universities in Britain says that if everyone wears masks in public it may be enough to stave off a second wave infections without requiring renewed lockdowns.
    • Health officials are urging people not to ease up on safety precautions to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, after millions of people gathered in anti-police-violence protests across the United States and as states continue to reopen. “You still have to practice a degree of caution: masks, physical distancing, diligent hand-washing and avoiding large groups,” Anthony S. Fauci, the country’s top infectious-disease expert, said Wednesday. Several members of the D.C. National Guard, which responded to protests in the area, tested positive for the coronavirus. Fauci said the news was “disturbing but not surprising,” given the situation. “The issue of physical separation is important. Masks can help. But it’s masks plus physical separation,” Fauci said. “And when you get congregations like we saw with the demonstrations … that’s taking a risk. And unfortunately, what we’re seeing now are the kinds of things we’re concerned about.” As hard-hit areas such as New York City and Chicago move into their next phase of reopening, the number of new cases of the virus is rising in other parts of the country — particularly rural ones — marking a worrisome next phase of the outbreak in the United States. Fauci struck a note of optimism on researchers’ progress developing a vaccine, telling GMA host Robin Roberts that he had confidence in the process of developing more than once vaccine candidate. He added that if the progress holds, a vaccine could be ready by the end of this year or by early 2021.
