The development of a region’s entrepreneurial critical mass depends on the availability of two key resources: investment capital and business development support services. Venture capital (VC) is a key component of investment resources and the Pittsburgh region has recently seen significant increases in the levels of funding that VC firms have provided to local start-up companies and entrepreneurs. In fact, since 2000, Pittsburgh Region firms have received over $2 billion in venture capital funding. Venture capital in Pittsburgh is being invested across a diverse range of industry sectors, with concentrations in bio-technology, software and Internet-related ventures. To be close to where they have invested their money and to nurture their investments, several venture capital firms have recently joined the list of Pittsburgh-based VC firms and have moved into the region.
