Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)
Transportation

Among the nation's largest airports in land area, Pittsburgh International (PIT) has been rated among the five best in the world by the Official Airline Guide (OAG) for the last four years. The past two JD Power Global Airport Passenger Satisfaction Index surveys rated PIT among its top five airports. Also, the 2003 People's Choice Awards, Conde´ Nast Traveler rated the airport first in the United States and third in the world in terms of Shops & Amenities and Comfort & Design. Since opening in 1992, it has offered an excellent alternative for travelers and cargo that need to avoid the delays and problems traditionally associated with terminals along the eastern seaboard.

One of the newest airports in the nation, it features two state-of-the-art terminals. The landside terminal, fashioned after the great train stations of the 1880s, houses the airport's ticketing, baggage handling and selected mercantile services. The airside terminal includes 75 jet gates, which allows passengers to reach connecting flights without changing levels or terminals.

On-site facilities include two drive through, runway-end aircraft de-icing pads, which can de-ice up to 12 departing aircraft. Additionally, four major runways (11,500 feet, 10,500 feet and two at 8,100 feet) offer simultaneous arrival and departure capabilities.

Pittsburgh International also features Airmall, the airport retailing concept that remains the standard by which airport concessions are measured. Servicing 10 million passengers annually, according to 2003 figures, Airmall features more than 100 brand-name retail outlets, including Brookstone, Clinique, Gap, Godiva, Nine West, PGA Tour Shop, and Swarovski. With prices guaranteed to be comparable to other outlets, the stores generate approximately $80 million annually. Airport Revenue News rated PIT as the "Airport with the Best Overall Concessions Program."

Transportation to and from the terminal is exceptionally easy thanks to the extensive efforts by the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to improve airport access from downtown Pittsburgh and the major interstate highways in the region. The Airport Expressway provides a loop around the airport, connecting with the Beaver Valley Expressway (PA Route 60) on the northwest and the Parkway West on the southeast side. The Beaver Valley Expressway, a 50-mile, four-lane, limited access highway, provides easy access to northwestern Pennsylvania and northeastern Ohio, while the Parkway West provides direct access to the city proper. Soon, all of the roads will be joined together as I-376. Additionally, the Port Authority of Allegheny County operates a low-cost shuttle for passengers in the downtown and Oakland areas.
