Powering Prosperity
Opportunities in Pittsburgh's Energy Economy

The Pittsburgh regional energy industry includes more than 700 firms that contribute more than 10% of the gross regional product, support some 105,000 jobs (directly/indirectly) and generate $13.7 billion in annual economic activity.

World energy demand is projected to increase by at least 35% by 2030. Therefore, the regions that control energy supply and innovate marketable solutions will be positioned to flourish.

Pittsburgh - The Nation's Energy Capital
The Pittsburgh region maintains a competitive advantage with the combination of its natural resource base, current employment and climate of innovation across seven energy sectors, explored in more detail below.

Of the regions with a significant natural resource base, ours is the only one that ranks in the top 25 across all seven sectors. This means that our energy economy is:

  • Diversified – spanning an array of sources
  • Integrated – from our natural resource base through the supply chain
  • Dynamic – creating new jobs here today, while energy-related innovations create the jobs of tomorrow

Extraction, Supply Chain, Innovation
Traditional Sectors Coal PA ranks sixth in the U.S. in proven coal reserves High concentration of mining equipment manufacturers and other firms supporting the coal industry Opportunities to leverage the only fossil fuel national research lab (NETL), only private sector coal R&D firm in the U.S. (CONSOL), and university research (CMU, Pitt, Penn State, WVU)
Natural Gas Marcellus Shale represents one of the largest new plays in the U.S.; PA has existing natural gas industry ranked 2nd in number of producing gas wells in U.S. Concentration of advanced materials manufacturing, heavy equipment, and chemical firms; eight PRA 'project wins' in sector in the region in 2008 Breakthroughs inunconventional drilling combined with continuing improvements to fracing and water treatment
Nuclear Half of the world's existing reactors based on locally-developed technology, resulting in proximate demand for supplies and services On-going innovation in commercial nuclear power and Naval propulsion research creates regional hub for R&D, complemented with very high concentration of nuclear engineers and technicians
Alternative Sectors Solar Concentration in glass, materials and electrical components position region as preferred supplier Developingcost-competitive solar technology by improving glass and solarcomponents
Wind Concentration of advanced materials manufacturing, coatings, chemicals, and fiberglass firms On-going materials research to make wind installations more efficient and cost-effective
Conservation & Distribution Systems Transmission & Distribution Components Concentration of electronic systems and components for traditional and alternative energy applications Systems integration breakthroughs are the focus of regional research consortium
Intelligent Building Technologies Concentration of electronic systems and components for building technology applications Academic programs for advancing building technologies
