More than $1 billion is spent annually at government, university and corporate centers of cutting-edge innovation. We're discovering sustainable ways to energize the world and bringing them to market:

• National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) – invests more than $1 billion in research funding annually at the nation's only federal research facility devoted to carbon capture technology.

• Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory – engages in more than $400 million in research funding annually to support the U.S. Navy's Nuclear Propulsion Program.

• The University of Pittsburgh Center for Energy at the Swanson School of Engineering – has five focus areas – energy diversification, renewable energy, clean coal technologies, hydrogen and environmental solutions.

• The Carnegie Mellon Electricity Industry Center – is an Alfred P. Sloan Foundation center of excellence described as "the largest research effort in the world focused on interdisciplinary problems of the electricity industry."

• Innovation Works – is a national model which accelerates the commercialization of energy-related innovation by providing capital and expertise for startups and growing companies.
